In the last decade, many electricity providers have opted to use smart meters to measure power usage. The desire to get accurate readings remotely and continuously has merit — it can provide savings to both the power company and consumer, and allow for more energy usage optimization. However, there is significant concern regarding the process of sending this information to your provider.

The solution often requires using radio frequencies (RF) to wirelessly communicate with wifi networks, cell towers, and other infrastructure. This means your smart meter is actively broadcasting signals from the side of your home, around the clock, whether you want it to or not.

Continuous RF emissions and the impact on consumer health has been a frequent topic of debate in the smart meter industry. Researchers and policy experts have raised concern about non-thermal health effects from prolonged RF exposure.

Unlike a cell phone you can put down, a smart meter emits RF radiation continuously from your exterior wall — 24 hours a day, 7 days a week — with no off switch. Because the meter is mounted directly to your home, the RF exposure accumulates over time. Residents in close proximity to the meter, such as those in bedrooms on exterior walls, face the highest risk.

Privacy invasion is another primary issue for smart meter consumers. The device itself sends detailed, real-time information to the power company about electricity usage, providing reports that could be used to extract more specifics about the consumer.

Usage reports allow companies to infer behavioral patterns — ranging from sleeping habits to the type of devices you use, to whether or not you are home at any given time. This data is collected by private corporations and is eventually up for sale. Debt collectors are known to use this data to infer if occupants are home.

Although power companies claim advanced encryption, it is only a matter of time until a harmful entity gains access. Imagine the advantage a burglar would have tracking your real-time location. This information could also be observed by government and police entities. Power companies have already used this data to exploit customers and charge them as much as possible.

In response to these concerns, governments have been launching reviews of these programs, and some companies even offer "opt-out" options. Other providers, however, have tacked on fees for customers that decide to opt-out.

Because smart meters cannot be removed from your property, the only way to reduce the emitting RF exposure is to constantly shield the meter with a fitted RF/EMF Faraday cover.
